Pseudonym vs. Real Name

On social media, users take on pseudonyms for all sorts of reasons. Some want to hide their identities while others want the freedom to post without having their comments linked back to their real names. However, some platforms such as Facebook and Google+ have guidelines about requiring users to keep real names so there is no anonymity or pseudonymity. Platforms such as Instagram or Reddit allow users to keep names such as animallover34 and destroyer82 which provides a sense of privacy to the user. So which one is better, pseudonyms or real names?

Arguments for pseudonyms include having protection to users who would like to share or discuss information that possibly puts them in a vulnerable situation. For example, a person with a disorder or illness may want to seek help from others on the web but may not want to reveal this to their friends and family. I experienced the use of pseudonyms during our community assignment when I followed a Reddit group. Many people refrained from using their real names and were much more open about sharing controversial topics. They also were not afraid to be offensive to other people or write about their true feelings. Overall, there are many situations where people want to express themselves without revealing who they actually are in the real world.

On the other hand, advocates of real-identity feel that social networks are just an extension of our real life social behavior and both identities should be the same. Using pseudonyms instead of real names can lead to more fake profiles and more spam. It can also promote behaviors such as online stalking and cyber bullying. As experienced in the Reddit group I joined, using pseudonyms can make users less accountable regarding the stuff they are publishing and comments they are making which leads to the likelihood of hostile environments.

For this class, we had the option of using pseudonyms vs. our real name when creating our blogs or joining other social media sites. I chose to use my real name on all platforms because I felt it provided a more engaging social ecosystem. What about you? Are you using your real name or do you feel more comfortable behind a pseudonym? What helped shape your decision?

The Role of Social Media During a Pandemic

In the face of COVID-19, social media has been a great way for people and communities to stay connected even while physically separated. Just imagine if this pandemic happened 15 years ago. Where would we have been with remote working and schooling from home?  Social media plays a big role in keeping people updated on current events about the pandemic. We have realtime information right at our fingertips in the face of a worldwide event. This information can help keep us safe and provide us with a better understanding of what is happening and how it may impact us. Of course, we have to be careful of spreading false information or getting information from places other than trusted sources. Until a month ago, most of us haven't heard of the term "social distancing" but now it is becoming the main term used in posts across multiple social media platforms. It has influenced the way we respond to others and how we have prepared for the pandemic. Another term I have heard is ...

Edmodo

I've heard of Edmodo before and knew it was like an education-focused social media platform, but I've never put it to use. I decided to do some more research on the tool to determine how it could be used in the classroom. Here is what I found. Teachers Edmodo users can manage their classes and consolidate all their activities in one place. Teachers also have unlimited options in terms of sharing digital content. They can embed videos, create learning groups, and manage calendar events. Edmodo also offers numerous organizational features for teachers and they can even print out rosters for substitutes. Some other ways Edmodo can be used in the classroom are: 1. Assessments Utilize the Edmodo quiz builder or poll feature to assess students learning. 2. Peer Reviews and Critiques Place students in small groups and have them post their work to their group for peer review and feedback. 4. Writing Projects Students can share their writing projects with each other in Edmodo. 5. Langua...

Instagram in the Classroom

I've been an avid user of Instagram in my personal life but never thought of using the app for a graduate level class. I signed up for a new account (you can follow me @leah_eme6414) and it got me thinking about how Instagram could be used in the classroom as a teacher. Instagram can be a fun and safe social media tool for students if used properly. You probably want to create a separate, private classroom, account and only post class-related things for your students and their parents to see. Once you have your classroom account set up, you can get busy searching related hashtags and posting images right away.  Showcase Student Work Instagram is the perfect way to show off student work to make your students feel proud. Just like teachers often hang up excellent work in the classroom, you can snap a picture and share it to Instagram for your students and parents to see. Find New Ideas Many other teachers have Instagram accounts that you can follow to find new fun ideas. You can find...
